GOVERNOR OF KOGI STATE NIGERIA CAPTAIN IDRIS WADA INVOLVED IN GHASTLY MOTOR ACCIDENT

The Governor of Kogi State,  Captain Idris Wada this afternoon was involved in a car crash along Ajaokuta road. He was returning back to Lokoja from a function when the accident occurred. His ADC died on the spot while the Governor and other occupants were rushed to a Government hospital in Lokoja. He is said to be in the Emergency Ward right now.

My heart goes out to his family . Such a sad news this festive season.

SHAKIRA WELCOMES BABY BOY

Colombian superstar Shakira and her soccer star boyfriend Gerard Pique have received a lovely  Christmas gift which is their first child, a son. The 35-year-old  gave birth to a son on Thursday and her elated partner took to Twitter to share the happy news.

"Our son is already born! We are very happy! Thank you all for your messages," Pique Tweeted.

The name of the baby boy has not yet been released.

BALOGUN MARKET LAGOS ISLAND ON FIRE

Many people were injured and cars destroyed when a multi-storey building packed with fire crackers and other types of goods went up in flames on Wednesday morning on Lagos Island.

Witnesses said the explosion went off around 9.30a.m as the city marked Boxing Day amid a lull in business activities.

The building is said to be located on Oko Awo Street in the popular Jankara area of Lagos, close to King Ado Secondary School.

Fire fighters and rescue agencies swiftly deployed on the scene and battled the huge blaze.

Within minutes of the explosion, the fire spread to a nearby building, sending hundreds of residents, traders and shoppers fleeing in the usually boisterous market area.

There were initial speculation around the country that a bomb had exploded in Lagos while a report said a plane crashed in the city.

The casualty figure is yet unknown although many injured persons have been rushed to the hospital with serious burns.

Fire crackers are banned in Nigeria although it is a common fare during Christmas and New Year celebrations in the country.

SECURITY OPERATIVES APPREHEND OKONJO IWEALA'S MOTHER ABDUCTORS

 

Operatives of the State Security Service, SSS, have arrested six of the abductors of Prof. Keneme Okonjo, mother of the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala. Okonjo, wife of the Obi of Ogwuashi-Ukwu, Prof. Chukwuka Okonjo, was kidnapped on December 9, 2012 at the palace of the traditional ruler.

However, through concerted efforts of the combined security agencies in the country, the victim was released on December 14. But in a bid to unravel those behind the kidnapping, arrests were made by the police, Army and men of the SSS.


Last week, 63 of the suspects earlier arrested by the Army were released unconditionally when their culpability could not be established. A competent source at the SSS told National Mirror yesterday that six of the real suspects had eventually been arrested in Asaba, Delta State, and might be flown to Abuja today.

The source also confirmed that a N40m ransom was actually paid for the release of the 82-year- old retired professor of Sociology.

Explaining how the suspects were arrested, the source said: “The N40m, which was paid to the kidnappers was marked money from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN. “What happened was that the money was paid on Wednesday by our men and by Thursday, two persons had gone to the Nebisi Road branch of an old generation bank to deposit N15m out of the money.

Because it was marked money, they were promptly arrested. “Our men were able to track four of the kidnappers with the aid of the two persons. Right now, we are on the trail of the remaining four suspects.

“The six suspects are supposed to be brought to Abuja tomorrow (today) to face further interrogation.”

Asked why the operatives were not able to arrest the suspects the time they came for the money, the source explained: “Don’t forget that as at that time the woman was still with the kidnappers and they could decide to kill her if they suspect anything phony. “Our major concern then was to ensure that the woman regained her freedom and was not harmed in any way.

In fact, that was the point the minister kept hammering to us. “She said that we should do everything possible to secure her mother alive, even if it meant paying whatever ransom the kidnappers asked for. “If you know how this is done, once they came for the money, we knew that the game was up for them. We knew that we must get them unless they would not spend that money in Nigeria.”

The Bank Of England has released a list of more than 150 great Britons that have been suggested by members of the public for the honour when the new notes are printed. Currently, the Bank of England £10 notes are Series E, but are due to be replaced with the new Series F notes next year, which means a change to the person on the back of the note too.

Whilst the thought of having someone like Becks or Robbie on the English currency may have caused a series of face-palms to occur up and down the country, fortunately it is looking as though someone of genuine historic significance may take the honour instead.

Amongst the more serious contenders set to decorated the £10 note are William Shakespeare, SirWinston Churchill, all the members of The Beatles and Geoffrey Chaucer amongst the top contenders to take over from Darwin. However Alan Turing, the Second World War Enigma codebreaker, is currently looking like the front-runner to grace the note with his presence, after an online petition calling for his achievements to be recognised managed to muster over 25,000 signatures so far, with the number fast increasing.

3 YEAR OLD BOY UNKNOWINGLY PUTS DEADLY EGGS IN WARDROBE

A three-year-old Australian boy was lucky to escape uninjured after a collection of eggs he found in his yard hatched into a slithering tangle of brown snakes inside his wardrobe.

Reptile specialist Trish Prendergast said Kyle Cummings could have been killed if he had handled the eastern brown snakes – one of the world's most venomous species on land.

Kyle found a clutch of nine eggs a few weeks ago in the grass on his family's property on the outskirts of Townsville in Queensland, Prendergast said. He had no idea what kind of eggs they were.

He put the eggs into a plastic takeout food container and stashed them in his bedroom closet, where his mother, Donna Sim, found them on Monday.

Seven had hatched, but the snakes remained trapped under the container's lid. The remaining two eggs were probably infertile and were rotten, Prendergast said.

"I was pretty shocked, particularly because I don't like snakes," Sim .

BLACKBERRY LOOSES A MILLION CUSTOMERS

It reported other bad news as well, a month before introducing its new BlackBerry 10 phones to the public. Revenue fell 48 percent in the company’s fiscal third quarter, ended Dec. 1, to $2.7 billion from $5.2 billion a year earlier.

After a favorable tax gain, RIM reported net income of $9 million, or 2 cents a share. A year ago during the same period, RIM earned $265 million, or 51 cents a share. The company said that using nonstandard accounting methods to adjust for the tax gain and other pretax charges led to an adjusted net loss of $114 million for the third quarter, or 22 cents per share.

 Research in Motion said on Thursday that it lost a million BlackBerry owners worldwide during the company’s last financial quarter, the first such decline in the device’s history.

AMERICA MOURNS THE KILLING OF 20 CHILDREN AND OTHERS IN CONNETICUT

Newtown and environs weathered a fourth day of funerals Thursday, six days after a 20-year-old gunman killed his mother at home, 20 children and six adults at the school and himself for reasons still unknown. Mourners laid to rest Catherine Hubbard, Benjamin Wheeler, Jesse Lewis and Allison Wyatt, all 6 years old; and Grace McDonnell, 7.

A service was held in Katonah, N.Y., for teacher Anne Marie Murphy, 52, who authorities believe helped shield some of her students from the rain of bullets. Roman Catholic Cardinal Timothy Dolan compared her to Jesus.

MAYAN'S DOOMSDAY THEORY-THE WORLD WILL END TODAY 21ST DECEMBER

Not sounding like a preacher, but as a Christian , all these predictions about the end of time is simply a waste of time.

Friday 21st December is a date that some say the ancient Mayan civilisation predicted the world would end. It has even been the subject of Hollywood apocalyptic film "2012".

The date marks the end of an era that lasted over 5000 years, according to the Mayan "Long Count" calendar.

Some believe the date, which coincides with the December solstice, is foretold as the end of the world by Mayan hieroglyphs.

People need to get their facts right. Enough of the predictions!

GENERAL YAKUBU GOWON REVEALS HOW HE NARROWLY ESCAPED DEATH

Former  Head of State  Gen. Yakubu Gowon said on Wednesday in Kafanchan, Kaduna State he narrowly missed the helicopter that crashed killing Kaduna State Governor Patrick Yakowa and ex-National Security Adviser Andrew Azazi in Bayelsa State on Saturday.

Four others also died in the crash.

Gowon said this during a Special Service Session to mark the 50th birthday   of Apostle Emmanuel Kure of Throney in Broom Ministry, Kafanchan.

He said, “As we were with the aide  to the President to pay our condolences, they were arranging  a Navy helicopter to take us to Yenogoa (with Yakowa). But, another helicopter was arranged for me and five others. And that was it.

RWANDAN EX MINISTER GETS SENTENCED TO 35 YEARS IN PRISON

The UN tribunal for Rwanda on Thursday handed a 35-year jail term to a former minister found guilty of genocide, in the court's final trial ruling.

Augustin Ngirabatware, planning minister at the time of the 1994 genocide, was found guilty of genocide, incitement to commit genocide and rape as a crime against humanity.

"For these crimes the court sentences you to 35 years in prison," the judge, William Hussein Sekule, told Ngirabatware.

The tribunal still has appeals pending but will wrap up its activities by the end of 2014.

Ngirabatware is the son-in-law of Felicien Kabuga, accused by the tribunal of having bankrolled the genocide, and the most notorious of the nine people indicted by the tribunal still at large.

MARK ZUCKERBERG AND WIFE DONATE OVER 18 MILLION FACEBOOK SHARES

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced -- via Facebook, of course -- that he and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have donated 18 million Facebook shares to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, a non-profit organization that works with philanthropists to manage their donations.

With Facebook stock worth around $27 a share at the time of this post, Zuckerberg and Chan's donation is worth just south of $500 million, making it his largest charitable donation yet. Zuckerberg said in his Facebook post that they plan to look for "areas in education and health to focus on next."

Zuckerberg was worth over $10 billion as of August 2012, and will take a salary of $1 per year starting in 2013.

The donation to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation marks the Facebook co-founder's second major act of philanthropy in as many years: In September 2010, Zuckerberg donated $100 million in Facebook stock to help Newark schools.

NIGERIAN POLICE AND CIVIL DEFENCE CORPS MEMBERS ENGAGE IN PUBLIC FIGHT

Ten Police officers on Tuesday afternoon engaged in a public fight with three Civil Defence Corps members at Berger roundabout in Abuja.

The ferocious clash caused a major gridlock at Berger Roundabout up to Utako Area of Abuja.

It was gathered that the police officers purportedly engaged in a fight with the civil defence officers for over interference in their reserved duty.

According to eyewitnesses “the police officers were trying to stop a vehicle and the Civil Defence people came to interfere, then the police officers who were more in number attacked them and started beating them up.”

It was further disclosed that there were sporadic gunshots as both parties lashed out whips at one other.

“There were gunshots and then I saw a police officer flogging a Civil Defence officer with a whip while he was trying to run away,” a witness said.

It took the intervention of a Divisional Police Officer from Utako Police Station to resolve the fracas.

The spokesperson of the Abuja Police Command, Doris England, has claimed that she is not aware of the situation and would make inquires about it.

VANDALIZED PIPELINE CAUSES VILLAGERS TO FLEE DUE TO INFERNO

RESIDENTS of Ijeododo in Ijegun, Lagos have fled the community following a pipeline explosion and the inferno in the village, located in Ojo Local Government of the state.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation pipeline exploded on Monday night  in the community.

As at 9.15pm on Tuesday, no casualty had been reported in the explosion said to have been caused by suspected pipeline vandals.

The NNPC, it was learnt, had discontinued supply of petrol through the line following the explosion. The corporation pumps about 11 million litres of petrol per day through the pipeline.

News Agency of Nigeria reported that fire fighters arrived the scene four hours after the fire started but could not immediately access the area.

A landlord, Mr Sabinus Igbozuluke, said, “I gathered my certificates and other important belongings because the fire could get beyond control.”

MAD WOMAN REGAINS SENSES AFTER BEING KNOCKED DOWN BY A CAR

News has circulated about Olubisi Aina from Sanyo area of Ibadan, Oyo State whom on Tuesday, 11th December 2012 ,regained her sanity  after an auto accident. Aina had been insane for 10 years or thereabout and paraded herself, most often nakedly, on the Sanyo-Temidire-Agbamu road, her habitation for over a decade.

She usually slept on her back with her face up in drainages or on the main road close to the bridge on Damo River in the area; and come rain or shine, Olubisi was always in her habitat and is well known in the neighbourhood. Perhaps that was her saving grace on Monday, 10th December, 2012 when a car ran over her where she was sleeping at about 9a.m.

Olubisi was quickly rushed to Oore-Ofe Hospital and Maternity Home where her bruised mouth and legs were attended to. However, after being discharged, patron of the hospital, Mr Toyin Adesina, advised that she should have a bath. She was later led by acquaintances to Damo River where she was given new sponge and soap for her bath. As she raised the sponge above her head, she said “Thank you God” in Yoruba Language. Instantly, she regained her sanity and whatever question was posed to her, she answered accurately.

LAGOS STATE SACKS 174 LASTMA OFFICIALS

174 officers of the state Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), have been sacked by the Lagos State Government for their alleged involvement in corruption, overzealousness and other crimes. The sack was part of moves to weed out bad eggs and reposition the authority for better service delivery and traffic management. Sources said 34 LASTMA officers were sacked two months ago over cases of corruption, fraud, overzealousness, among others.

It was also gathered that two months ago, LASTMA recommended 200 officers for dismissal and their names were forwarded to the Civil Service Commission (CSC) to determine their fate after the affected officers had faced the Personnel Management Board (PMB), a disciplinary organ of the state government. Daily Sun investigation showed that in the last one week, 140 LASTMA officers had received their letters of sack from the CSC after they were found wanting in the prosecution of their jobs.

Statistics of the retrenchment exercise revealed that most of the LASTMA personnel sacked were junior officers who had been enmeshed in fraudulent acts, indiscipline, dereliction of duty, extortion of money from motorists, among others.

The Head of Service, Adesegun Ogunlewe, had warned that any LASTMA officer found extorting money from motorists in the guise of the new road traffic law would be dismissed outright as prescribed by the law.

PROTESTS ARISE IN OGUN STATE OVER DEMOLITION OF HOUSES

Hundreds of residents of Aro Love Estate in Ota, Ado-Odo Local Government Area of Ogun State have protested alleged plan by the state government to demolish their houses for the extension of Oja Ota Market.

The protesters consisting  of men ,women and children chanted war songs and carried placards  with various inscriptions such  as “Our land is not under acquisition,”  “No to injustice against Aro Love Estate occupants,” “No to oppressors”, “Don’t render us homeless,” and “Please, don’t treat us like slaves.”

Mr. Akeem Soola, the surveyor in charge of the land, who also doubles as the spokesman for the landlords said there was no prior notice from the government before its officials came to mark all the houses in the estate for demolition.

The residents complained that they were given seven days ultimatum to vacate their houses.

They therefore appealed to Governor Ibikunle Amosun to intervene and save them from losing their property.

IBINABO URGES NIGERIANS TO PRAY FOR NKIRU SILVANUS

AGN President, Ibinabo Fiberisima has revealed that Nkiru Sylvanus was kidnapped in her home at an undisclosed time.

‘We are trying to liaise with her State Government to find a solution to it. It’s unfortunate that people can do things like this to people who make them happy‘, Ibinabo lamented. Nigerians please pray for her, she said.
