Some weeks ago, news circulated about American actor Michael Douglas attributing his throat cancer to oral sex .Though he retracted the story, it aroused my curiosity.
Asides drinking and smoking , throat cancer is also caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) "which actually comes from cunnilingus".
Cunnilingus is an oral sex act performed on a female. It involves the use by a sex partner of the mouth, lips, and tongue to stimulate the female's clitoris, vulva, or vagina.
In a study published in NEJM (New England Journal of Medicine), Dr Maura Gillison of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, and team suggested that people who have oral sex with at least 6 different partners have a significantly higher risk of developing throat cancer.
The team recruited 100 patients who had recently been diagnosed with oropharyngeal cancer, as well as 200 "healthy" individuals (the control group).
They found that people who had at least 6 oral-sex partners during their lifetime were 3.4 times more likely to have throat cancer. Those with 26 or more vaginal-sex partners had a 3.1 times higher risk of developing throat cancer.
Natalie Marshall, a medical oncologist with Alta Bates Summit's Comprehensive Cancer Center in Berkeley, where she specializes in head and throat cancers about cancer and its link to HPV.
She stated that only a small percentage of people could contract the virus and fight it off, the larger percentage being men.
The virus HPV -16 is also said to cause cervical cancer, penile , anal and vaginal cancers.
Luckily though a vaccine can prevent the ailment. The three series vaccination is most effective in people up to the age of 26. It is best to have them vaccinated as boys and girls before they have become sexually active she further stated.
Those more at risk of contracting the virus are people with a large number of sexual partners.
Some symptoms of the disease include throat pain or a lump in the mouth , difficulty swallowing or bleeding in the mouth.
I got curious and also wanted to find out the risks associated with Fellatio.
Fellatio aka blow job is an act of oral stimulation of the penis by a sexual partner or by oneself (autofellatio). It involves the stimulation of the penis by the use of the mouth, lips, tongue or throat.
As with other kinds of oral sex, the partner performing fellatio is at risk of gonorrhea ,herpes infection in or around the mouth as well as for syphilis, while the receiving partner could experience a herpes infection in the genital area.
This goes to show that even oral sex isn't safe at all. Choose your partners wisely , or hold body till marriage.
What of cheating spouses in marriage? Omo, it is God that protects , because a promiscuous spouse can actually transmit diseases to their partners.
If you aren't married yet , this is the time to pray against settling with a promiscuous partner knowingly ( thinking that they'll change) or unknowingly.
God help us...
