EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW- YINKA DAVIES TALKS NIGERIAN IDOL, MARRIAGE, CHILDREN

                                                                   Yinka and I

                      Yinka's Children

Yesterday, I decided to chill in a bar around my hood named ''The Village Lounge'' in Ajao Estate Anthony Village Lagos  with a friend  in a bid to kill time and catch up and in walks Yinka Davies Nigerian Idol judge and singer.

I couldn't believe my eyes , what an opportunity I said to myself . I wasn't properly dressed, had no questions written down, but decided not to let the opportunity pass me by.
I immediately approached her , introduced myself and my blog and my intentions to interview her.
To my surprise , she was so down to earth , sweet and was ready to grant me my interview though impromptu.
I had to solicit a paper and pen from the bartenders and began asking questions from my head (remember I had no questions prepared, since meeting her was accidental).

Jeffery Daniels, Yinka Davies, Femi Kuti

So when did you start singing and how did you get into the entertainment business?
I started singing since I was little. I was an actor between 1986- 1987 and was forced into the  singing /entertainment business proper  in 1990 by Sam Ukwa who was the musical director for the band  I belonged to i.e ''Caution Band'' which had the likes of  Samie Okposo , Alex O etc.

How has the experience been so far?
My dear, it is a process. My singing talent is actually a gift from God. I started back then and have been performing ever since then.

How did you get  to be a Judge on  Nigerian Idols?
Back when Nigerian Idols started initially, the then project manager named Chichi Nwoko approached me and insisted that I be a judge on the show and here I am today.

Watching the show, you seem to be sort of hyper and highly energetic. What is the cause and source?
(She laughs) I am naturally like that oo. I was simply born that way.
Some ladies have immense energy, it is simply natural.

What are your best moments on the Nigerian Idol show?
There are so many good moments , but my best I would say is when I get to pinch Femi Kuti and Jeffrey Daniels under the table when some of the contestants are performing and while we are trying to deliberate on a particular contestant.
Secondly, Jeffrey Daniels draws so well. Spotting some caricature drawings he makes of the contestants keeps me going and entertained.

What is your experience working with Femi Kuti and Jeffrey Daniels on the show?
Awesome! Femi is the bomb, and  sitting next to Jeffrey is a dream come true.

Are you going to be a Judge on the next season of Nigerian Idols?
Well, you just have to wait and see.

Do you have an album?
Yes I do. My album is called  Black Chiffon and was released in 2011.

Are you married or in a relationship?
No, I am not currently .  I am very available at a very high price.

What do you mean by high price?
It means the  person who can pay , should do they talking.

Do you mean monetary when you speak of pay?
Must it be monetary?

What qualities are you looking out for in a potential mate/ husband?
He must have a heart. '' No matter how many times a man lies, his heart won't

Can you marry someone in the entertainment industry?
I can, it doesn't matter.

When do you intend getting married then?
It will happen , when it will happen

What is your most prized possession?
My two adorable soldiers/ my sons

Really! You have two sons? You do not look it at all
Yes I do. One is 18 and the other is 20 years old.

What about their father since you say  you are not married?
Don't worry about the father of the kids, they are missing in action.

You said they, does it mean they are from different fathers?
Leave their fathers alone ( She laughs)

Haba Yinka, you are not co-operating
Are we not gisting ?

What motivates you and keeps you going?
Being grateful for everything. Life, situations, everything.

What is your advice to upcoming artistes?
They have to keep at what the do and continue to examine themselves. They must allow self preservation, self judgment, self srutinization, be objective and open to access themselves on the regular.
They also have to keep the right spirit going , pray hard and be willing to help and serve others.

What of artistes who have tried and are not making it in the industry , who are on the verge of giving up. What do you have to say to them?
If anyone gives up on anything, they were never meant to be there. For people who sing or go into anything for the fame and material benefits and not out of true passion, they all come and go .

When you see upcoming artistes with great talents , do you feel threatened?
How can? The young shall grow, while the old are established

Thank you Yinka, It was really nice meeting you. I am grateful for the time
My pleasure darling ( We peck each other).
