44 year-old Barcelona Coach Tito Vilanova, who has guided the club to the top of La Liga in his first season, will undergo surgery on Thursday and will then face six weeks of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The news has left the club in a state of shock.
Vilanova had an operation to remove a cancerous tumour from a gland in his upper neck in Nov 2011 and Barcelona confirmed he will require another operation. He replaced Pep Guardiola as manager in June after working alongside him for five years and has guided Barcelona to their most successful start to a league campaign.
Jordi Roura, his assistant, is expected to take over in his absence and though it is unclear when Vilanova will return, Barcelona have hinted that he will be able to continue working as he recovers.
