INEC OFFICE ABUJA NIGERIA GUTTED BY FIRE

There was pandemonium yesterday at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, as staff ran in different directions following a fire that began in a section of the head office complex.

The  fire incident started at about 10.30 am but was quickly put out by a combined team of fire fighters from the Federal Fire Service and National Emergency Manage-ment Agency (NEMA) in Abuja.

The fire destroyed documents and other valuables including office equipment and personal effects of the Voter Registry Director, Engineer Emmanuel T. Akem.

INEC Director of Public Affairs, Emmanuel Umenger  said the incident would not in any way affect the operational capacity of the Commission. He said the cause of the fire was being investigated and the outcome of the inquiry would be made known in due course.

However, there are speculations that the fire might have been caused by close circuit.
