Nigeria has been declared officially free of Ebola after 42 days ( double the incubation period ) with no new cases, the World Health Organization (WHO) says.
WHO representative Rui Gama Vaz, speaking in the capital Abuja, said it was a "spectacular success story".
WHO praised Nigeria for being able to combat the disease after a Liberian diplomat Patrick Sawyer flew into Lagos in July and collapsed at the airport. Health care workers treating Sawyer were infected, and as it spread it killed eight people .
More than 4,500 people in West Africa have died since the outbreak , mostly in Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone.
