There are many definitions to love. Some define it as when you have a feeling of strong affection towards a person or thing. A feeling of intense desire and attraction toward a person with whom one is disposed to make a pair; the emotion of sex and romance etc.
In this post , I will be focusing more on romantic love.
We all know loving someone is more than man meets woman, they fall in love and live happily ever after.
It entails sacrifice, sharing, compromise, patience, long-suffering, faithfulness, trust etc.
While some have enjoyed the dividends of various prices paid for love to a large extent, same cannot be said for others.
Many have loved and ended up being killed by a jealous lover over advances from other sexes, some have had their entire fortune disappear within a twinkle of an eye either through expensive divorce settlements, being duped and tricked by a trusted lover, sacrificing their entire earnings to make their partners/lovers happy etc.
In yoruba culture, some husbands go as far as lacing their wives with a traditional killer charm called ''Magun'' meaning ''Don't climb'' to kill anyone who dares have sexual relations with their wives.
Even on Crime and Investigation channel, I am often dazed when I see case studies of ''Women who kill'', often out of jealousy.
Others even go as far as stealing , rituals , fraud , satanism etc in order to please a partner/lover.
As an individual, what price would you be willing to pay for love?
Below are a few case studies
THE LIP PLATE OF THE MURSI TRIBE WOMEN OF ETHIOPIA
(Case of undergoing body altercations to appear unappealing to slave traders and appealing to their men)
Mursi women wear lip plates ( often painful ) to be attractive to their spouses/suitors and loved by them. The larger the plate the more she is desirable for marriage. Lip plates started when slave traders were capturing women for slaves to sell over the world. It is thought that they started the lip separation and inserting a plate around the lower lip to distort the women and make them unattractive to avoid being captured for slavery.
Plates are made of clay. In public events they have some real big and nicely painted ones. Some are made of wood. The lower lip is actually separated and the lip plates start small and work up to a larger one. The Bride prices is more with a bigger lip plate.
THE ''MUGULICIOUS'' PRICE OF LOVE
This was clearly depicted in Nigerian artiste Sound Sultan's video '' Natural Something''.
It entails clearing your account and going broke in the name of being in love with the wrong person.
''Ahhh Chidinma! I am a victim, how was I supposed to know he/ she was sapping or using my head ?''
My response- Are you a learner?
THE CASE OF JACK GIVING UP HIS LIFE FOR ROSE IN TITANIC
Do remember the scene in the movie when Jack played by Leonardo Di Caprio gave up the raft to save his love interest in the movie Rose played by Kate Winselt and froze to death?
Now, so many are saying to themselves, ''common Chidinma, this is purely a movie and it's fictitious''. Yes I agree, but realistically, so many have given up more in the name of love. Body parts to save a loved one , death penalties as a result of satisfying a loved one through crime, almost loosing their lives during abortions in a case of unwanted pregnancies etc.
THE LEGENDARY HANGING GARDENS OF BABYLON
This garden is one of the 7 wonders of the world and it came into existence purely borne out of love.
One legend says that the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were created by Emperor Nebuchadnezzar II, the king of Babylon, for his Persian wife, Queen Amytis, because she missed the green hills and valleys of her homeland.
THE CASE OF THE JEALOUS SPOUSE WHO LOCKED UP HIS GIRLFRIEND'S PANTS TO PREVENT HER FROM CHEATING
A 40 years old man was arrested for locking up his girlfriend's pants using a chastity belt for years just so that she won't cheat on him!
According to CNN, the man's abused, unidentified 25-year-old Mexican girlfriend recently had to tell cops about the abuse after she was left unable to go to the bathroom for several hours because she couldn’t unlatch the padlock on her jeans.
THE BIGGEST PRICE OF ALL JOYCELYN WILDENSTEIN
Jocelyn Wildenstein married billionare art collector Alec Wildenstein when they were both in their 30s. He was a member of the Wildenstein family – a wealthy family of renowned art dealers.
After some years, her husbands love for her began fading and she proceeded to pleasing him, which cost her a very expensive price.
Jocelyn realized that her husband, Alec, loved his jungle estate and the cats that inhabited it, more than anything else in life. He was so enamoured with lions, he had paintings of them all over the house.
With this information, she went to her plastic surgeon and told him: transform me into a giant cat. She thought if she looked like one of the lions her husband loved so much, he would love her again.
Wildenstein is rumoured to have spent $4,000,000 apparently done to please her husband, who loved big cats.
The first time Wildenstein saw his newly-sculpted wife, he was said to have screamed in horror, unable to recognise her.
Jocelyn Wildenstein despite all efforts walked in on her husband and a 19-year-old Russian model in her bedroom at the Wildenstein New York home, and he threatened her with a gun.
She received $2.5 billion in the divorce settlement and $100 million each year for 13 years after.
IS YOUR PRICE DESERVING AND WORTH IT?
