I got inspired to write this post after I put up a status on my Blackberry which says'' And the lord turned around the captivity of my chopped hair''.
I can't remember myself ever having perfect good hair from childhood till adulthood. There is always a chop/traces of baldness on the sides and front. I used to be initially bothered about it when I was younger, but now , thanks to hair extensions and weaves, the flaws of nature get covered and well hidden, afterall the American girl group TLC said in one of the lines of their songs ''Unpretty'' You can buy your hair if it won't grow, you can fix your nails if you say so''
.
My friend Chiaka who is married with a kid upon sighting my status was quick to point out that she'd like to know how I got my hair back, since she was experiencing serious hair loss.
I've always known Chiaka to have lovely , long lush hair, and I was curious to find out what could result in her rapid hair loss, since she wasn't into dyeing her hair or using harsh chemicals and products.
She stressed her dilemma started after the birth of her son, and many attributed her hair loss to child birth.
She also said she noticed she was a bit taller, but I laughed it off.
I had never heard of pregnancy making women taller , or loosing hair, so I proceeded as usual with my research, and below is what I found.
HAIR LOSS
Many new mothers experience hairloss between three and six months after they give birth.
Some pregnancy hormones help in keeping hair lush and preventing those hairs from falling out why some women's hair look really lush during the course of pregnancy.
But after child birth, those hormones drop back to normal, the extra hairs drop, too.
Here is what some new moms had to say
''My hair was falling out so badly that you could see clumps in the shower, hair all over the bedroom floor and all over the bed''.
It was literally hair down day everyday! I started to feel like I was getting bald patches as the hair was thin and I could start to see my scalp more.
Another mother said
Hair loss during or after pregnancy is very common. This is due to the hormonal changes. I have gone through the same problem.
Another Emily Emily Mcpherson said
I felt compelled to comment because this happened to me, and i searched the net in vain for some reassurance! at about 4 mons pp, i began losing handfuls of hair. really tons! i should note that during my pregnancy, i didn't shed at all, so when my hair started falling out, i thought it was just getting back to normal. i was wrong. it kept falling out. after about a month, it was noticeably thinner at the top and sides, and i was crying every day, sure that i was different than all the other women who had suffered this cruel joke of nature, and that i was surely, going bald. i had my thyroid and iron checked, normal. i was beside myself and sinking fast into a depression. i felt sick every time i ran my fingers through my hair and pulled out a handfull, or looked at my pillow and discovered a bush!
Notice the patches
Even a celebrity mom Kim Kardashian experienced hair loss after having her baby girl North West.
Solutions to the post partum hair loss include hair supplements and use of hair extensions to cover up patches.
New mums are advised not to freak out as their hair often grows back later in most cases.
HEIGHT INCREASE
A couple of adult females who went through pregnancy have noticed that they increased in height.
''I used to be 5’2.5″ before pregnancy. I was just measured at my doctor visit and I am 5’5″. I am amazed! I also have many back problems now though. I’ve always had some issues but after pregnancy they became unbearable'' says a mother.
Several anecdotal reports have emerged from pregnant women about themselves growing taller during their pregnancy, even as an adult when their epiphyseal growth plates, responsible for longitudinal height growth as a teenager, have long calcified over.
Another mum said I have also been 5’2″ since I was in middle school. Last time I went to the doctor I measured 5’3″. That was the first time I was measured since baby #1. Maybe I will be 5″4″ by the end of #2 and tower over my small Italian family – Joyfulgirl36
I have to agree! 5′ 4 when I started now 5’5″!!! – Alaxamber
According to a researcher named Tyler, the height increase was caused by a muscle relaxing protein called Relaxin, and his claim has a little bit of validity.
He found a study in PubMed which showed that the hip wide and hip size of heifers (young female cows before giving birth) seemed to have have gotten bigger from before the first pregnancy and after it.
Could it be that from pregnancy, the hip bone in some women are twisted or bend open in such a way to actually stretch out the pubis symphysis?
Could the Pubis Symphysis be pulled in a way during the pregnancy and during the labor when the women is actually giving birth to make the alignment between the hip joint socket to the overall skeletal structure straighter, thus allowing for increased height?
Possibly but the height increase should be a few millimeters at most due to how the femur is attached to the hip bone.
proximal end of the femur is not attached to the hip bone in a vertical fashion, but horizontally, then it would not make sense to say that the stretching of such a small cartilage area in the middle of the hip should be able to cause the women to grow 1 inch, let alone 3 inches as reported by one person on an internet discussion board. -Tyler’s explanation currently is that from the type of hormone known as Relaxin released during pregnancy, the women develop looser ligaments and tendons so that when they stand up straight for say a height measurement during their annual physician checkup, the measured height goes up. However the logic would not explain why a new mother staying at home after giving birth, walking around with a regular posture, not stretching out completely for any height measurement, would notice that her husband/partner looks shorter than before. She is not stretching out her now looser ligaments for anything on purpose.
